Hello Everyone, My Son Is 13 And Has Autism. Looking For A School And Summer Program For My Son
I'm currently living in Washington DC and my son is 13 attends K-12 home school program. I'm willing move and looking hard to find a school in Maryland and a summer program for him. I'm just so afraid to send him to a regular public school. Hes very shy loves drawing, but has no friends. I feel awful about that because he has told me he feels alone. It's been a long road for us finding good schools. I just really need some advice on what to do.
We are in Illinois, so I don't know how helpful my answers are - but here goes. Illinois school districts 54 and 211 have good programs for students with autism. This is in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Taxes are high. Also the suburbs have banded together to create special recreational programs and activities outside the schools for the special needs community. Ours is called NWSRA - Northwest Special Recreation Association. Some of the libraries and schools also offer social nights for the special needs community too. So, I guess you want to start by looking for places that have special needs recreational opportunities and library programs. Then look at the schools the feed these programs. Best wishes finding the resources your loved one needs.
