Any Tips On How To Deter Nail Biting?
My 2 year old not on the spectrum but with SPD constantly bites and chews his fingernails and toenails until they bleed. Does anyone have any helpful tips on how to deter this kind of habit?
So far we have been using redirection, as he will not but anything gooey or slimy in his mouth. Thanks!
gummy bears, chewing gum, redirection when you see him with no attention to the fact that he is chewing nails, shirts, etc.
try something crunchy then...he obviously has a oral fixation and is trying to satisfy it.
My son chews nails, shirt sleeves, etc. thy tried giving him a chewy tube at school and he refuses to use it. My guess is he doesn't want the attention on him. I would like to get him o try gum,but he has some oral sensory issues and won't even try... Any ideas?
Putting something unpleasant on his nails may make it stop but you can also do preventative strategies as well before or at the same time.
You can try a few things. A lot of the kids I work with use chewy tubes...we just redirect their biting to that. Most of them have their chewy tube attached to them somehow so that they can always have it with them. I've also used wet wash cloths (you can also put them in the freezer), popsicles or anything else that is appropriate to chew on.
